#On This Day; In 1970 Ratings system changes
A new system of movie ratings is announced on this day in 1970. Although the United Kingdom and other
countries had employed a ratings system for many years, American films were unrated until 1968. Instead,
the industry's self-imposed regulations, the Production Code, dictated what was and wasn't appropriate on
screen. That code was created in 1930 by the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America and was
put into strict effect in 1934. The code outlined specific details of what was suitable for a film,
including requirements that a movie not "lower the standards of those who see it." The code forbade
the portrayal of drug trafficking, "excessive and lustful kissing," seduction, and mixed-race relationships.
It also stated that movies should not portray villains sympathetically or make fun of clergy members.
